The top layer of skin is called the epidermis. The epidermis serves to protect. It is made up of stratified squamous. Stratified squamous is many layers of flat cells. The epidermis contains 5 layers. From bottom to top the layers are named stratum basale, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum licidum, and stratum corneum.  At the bottom layer, cells form new skin cells and push the old ones up to replace the top cells that die and shed about every two weeks.

Second layer (located under the epidermis) is called the dermis. The dermis contains nerve endings, sweat glands, oil glands, and hair follicles. This layer is made of connective tissue. Made up of two sub layers, papillary layer and reticular layer. these layers are made up of collagen fibers. The dermis is responsible for the tensile strength of skin. Its main functions are to regulate temperature and to supply the epidermis with nutrient-saturated blood. Much of the body's water supply is stored within the dermis
